The Creation of

“The Gouldian Cafe”

In late October, early November 2005 the aviary was moved into a new room in our home.  The old aviary had been in what is called “The Media Room” in our house and we moved it into what is called “The Gameroom”.  We tore up the carpet, and moved the birds in.  This had always been the long range goal, but it needed to happen sooner rather than later due to Hurricane Rita.  After Rita hit we began experiencing rolling blackouts that would last anywhere from 15 minutes to 6 hours long.  The old aviary had no windows in it and when the electricity would go out the birds would be in the dark in the middle of the afternoon.  I knew that over time this would disturb their systems in relation to breeding.  The gameroom has four large windows in it, so in a rush over a weekend we made the switch.

At this time we have two cats, one orange tabby named TJ who is rather fat and just too lazy to be bothered with the birds, but last May we acquired another cat, Chloe who is about a year old and is very interested in the birds.  For many weeks we had to find many creative ways to keep her out of the new aviary as it didn’t have doors yet.  Despite all my efforts to keep her out, she would always outsmart me and as a result I lost many birds.  She had figured out how to put her paw through the cage bars and unfortunately several hens came to an untimely end.

Just as soon as we could, we had doors put up!

The aviary was without a proper flooring system for about 6 weeks, when this past Thanksgiving weekend we bit the bullet and laid down “glue less” laminate purchased from Home Depot.

This project was just finished a few days ago, December 5, 2005 and I have been able to get into the new aviary and set things up, hence the birth of THE GOULDIAN CAFÉ.

Grab a cup of coffee or tea and enjoy the pictures.  If you are ever in town (North Houston) you are ALWAYS welcome to come by The Gouldian Café to share a hot beverage,  good conversation and take in the beautiful surroundings.  Be careful though, you may end up going home with a pair!
